Our client required Japanese knotweed to be removed from 6 locations across a disused landfill which was being converted to a solar farm. Upon surveying the site, 5 additional stands of Japanese knotweed were identified which were incorporated into the proposal for the site.
Taking 5 days, a 3 man team mobilised to excavate and process 136 cu m of infested soil from 7 of the 11 identified stands. Excavation was restricted to a depth of 400mm to ensure that the clay cap layer was not disturbed or damaged. Processed soil was backfilled back into the excavation to allow the project to proceed with no hindrance or delays. Completing the task on-time was extremely important as construction and installation of the solar modules had already commenced.
Due to the depth restriction during excavation, some rhizome would remain in the soil which the client was made aware of. This area will therefore be monitored and treated as required, alongside the remaining 4 stands of Japanese knotweed. Dead canes will also be cleared from site at the end of every year.
