Knutsford, Cheshire

Project Overview

Our clients in Knutsford, Cheshire, contacted us to address an extensive bamboo infestation that had spread significantly across their garden into a neighbouring property. Originally planted by a tenant in a confined area, the bamboo had since spread beyond its boundaries, even emerging behind a Wendy house in the corner of the property.

Works Undertaken: February 2023

Cost: £10,000

Area affected: >40m including runners

Challenge

The bamboo had burrowed under the boundary fence, encroaching into a neighbours raised bed, constructed of brick and wooden sleepers that were being forced apart by the invading bamboo. Additionally, another separate boundary on the property contained a second infestation, requiring the removal of rhizomes from both the lawn and brickwork of a third address.

Solution

To prevent further spread and damage, our team carried out a mechanical excavation across all three properties. Key steps included:

  • Using a 0.8T digger to systematically remove the bamboo and its extensive rhizome network.
  • Lifting large sections of the patio to access and remove extensive bamboo runners.
  • Ensuring careful excavation to minimise disruption while achieving complete removal.

Outcome

The initial excavation was successfully completed, removing all visible signs of bamboo growth. To ensure long-term effectiveness:

  • We will return for the first of two scheduled monitoring visits later in the year to check for any signs of regrowth.
  • Our clients opted for a five-year guarantee, providing further peace of mind against potential re-emergence.

By taking swift and thorough action, we helped our clients reclaim their outdoor space while preventing further spread to neighbouring properties.
